Volkswagen plans to close four German plants by 2034
According to media reports, Volkswagen is preparing to gradually halt production at four plants in Germany by 2034 as part of a broader cost-cutting and restructuring drive.
Volkswagen is pressing ahead with an extensive austerity and restructuring programme that, according to information obtained by media outlets, will see the gradual closure of four production plants in Germany by 2034.
Closure timeline
The plants in Emden and Zwickau could be the first to stop production, potentially as early as 2031. Production at the Hannover plant is planned to end a year later, in 2032, while the Audi plant in Neckarsulm would continue operating until 2034. Importantly, the closures would not be immediate — each plant would keep running until production of its current models concludes, after which manufacturing would be wound down entirely.
Reasons behind the decision
Volkswagen's management says the plant closures are necessary to cut costs, simplify the group's structure and strengthen competitiveness. The carmaker faces mounting pressure from Chinese manufacturers, while production costs in Europe remain high. The company argues that without transformation, maintaining long-term profitability would not be possible.
Workforce reaction
The plans have triggered strong opposition from employees and trade unions, since the closures would affect not only Volkswagen workers but also the wider regions where the plants are located. Volkswagen is thus facing one of the most significant transformation phases in its history — production in Germany will become more concentrated, while some manufacturing capacity is likely to shift to other European countries.
