Walsh takes silver after unanimous defeat to Jaismine

Northern Ireland boxer Michaela Walsh had to settle for silver at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, losing to India's Jaismine Jaismine by a unanimous decision. The 33-year-old, who fights out of the Holy Family club, has now won a medal at each of her four successive Commonwealth Games appearances. This is her third silver, after finishing second in 2014 and 2018, and she missed the chance to add a second gold to the one she claimed in Birmingham four years ago.

The fight went Jaismine's way on all five judges' scorecards, with three judges scoring it 29-28 and two 30-27. Walsh started slowly and lost the opening round 3-2 on the judges' scores, leaving her with an uphill battle. She made the second round a much closer affair and then went all out for a stoppage in the third, but her efforts were in vain as Jaismine did enough to take the gold.

It is Northern Ireland's third silver medal of the Glasgow Games, following Barry McClements and Daniel Wiffen in the pool, and their 11th overall. Walsh joins bowler Neil Booth, shooter Martin Millar, and athletics duo Mike Bull and Lady Mary Peters on four medals. Only shooter David Calvert has won more, with eight medals including four golds.

Two Northern Ireland debutants have the chance to add boxing's first two golds later today. Kaci Rock faces England's Sacha Hickey in the women's welterweight final at 11:45 BST, while Jon McConnell meets Wales' Orlando Holley-Sotomi in the men's light-middleweight final at 13:15.
