Volvo brings back XC40 plug-in hybrid with fresh look and Gemini AI
Volvo is reviving the plug-in hybrid version of its XC40 SUV after a three-year hiatus, adding a redesigned exterior, a larger screen with Google Gemini, and an upgraded safety sensor suite. The updated model arrives at dealerships early next year.
Volvo has announced the return of the plug-in hybrid version of its XC40 compact SUV, roughly three years after discontinuing it. The mild hybrid variant and the electric EX40 have remained available in the US and other markets throughout that time. The refreshed XC40 will reach dealerships early next year, featuring a significantly updated exterior and interior.
The plug-in hybrid acts as a middle ground for buyers who want improved fuel efficiency without fully committing to an electric vehicle. That option also benefits Volvo itself, which recently stepped back from its earlier pledge to sell only EVs by 2030. The company has not yet disclosed details about the new XC40's powertrain, engine choices, electric motor, driving range, or battery capacity.
Exterior and technology updates
The SUV gets a reworked version of Volvo's signature "Thor's Hammer" LED headlights, along with a new front grille, bumper, hood, and front wings, plus a redesigned rear with new lighting, bumper, and tailgate. Buyers will be able to choose from three diamond-cut wheel designs in 18-, 19-, and 20-inch sizes.
The biggest changes are inside the cabin. The infotainment screen grows to 11.2 inches with higher resolution and a redesigned interface built for quicker navigation with fewer taps. Google's Gemini now serves as the voice assistant, handling route planning, finding specific locations, and managing messages. The cabin also gains an improved wireless phone charger and additional smart storage options.
New safety sensor suite
The XC40 introduces a new software and sensor platform aimed at real-time collision avoidance, automated emergency steering, and automatic emergency braking. This includes new front and corner radars, a new front camera, new rear corner radars, 12 additional ultrasonic sensors, and new parking cameras. New safety features include door-opening alerts to warn occupants of passing cyclists, lane change assist, smoother lane-following support, and an optional 3D/360-degree camera for low-speed maneuvering and parking.
Akhil Krishnan, interim lead for Volvo's 30 and 40 Series, said the enhancements to design, technology, and safety make this the best version of the XC40 yet, and that the popular model is set to remain one of Volvo's best-selling cars for years to come.
