Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong met her Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, on the sidelines of the ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting in Manila. The meeting, their 12th, focused on regional stability and bilateral issues. Wong expressed Australia's concerns over China's recent test of a nuclear-capable submarine-launched missile, noting that many Pacific island nations have voiced strong objections. She also discussed consular matters, including the case of Dr. Yang Jun, and emphasized respect for Australian laws, sovereignty, freedom of expression, safe maritime conduct, and human rights. Additionally, Wong criticized China's actions in the South China Sea following a clash at Second Thomas Shoal, where Chinese coast guard reportedly struck a Filipino sailor. The incident led to a diplomatic exchange, with the Philippines and China summoning each other's ambassadors. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaffirmed Washington's commitment to freedom of navigation in the region.
