In the six weeks since Hearts narrowly missed out on the Scottish Premiership title, the Tynecastle club has undergone a major overhaul: the captain and several other players have left, seven new faces have arrived, and now a new head coach has been appointed. Forty-seven-year-old Belgian Wouter Vrancken replaces Derek McInnes, marking a fresh chapter where Tony Bloom's analytics company, which has been involved with Hearts for over a year, takes center stage.

Sporting director Graeme Jones said Vrancken was a 'standout' in the data during the search for a head coach. Vrancken's track record of overachieving with Belgian clubs like Sint-Truiden and Genk impressed, as did his history of working as a 'head coach' within a collaborative recruitment structure. He is also friends with Chris O'Loughlin, sporting director of Union Saint-Gilloise, another club with Bloom's involvement.

Vrancken's teams in Belgium were known for aggressive, attacking football, and he intends to bring that style to Hearts. He wants his side to have the ball, play positively and constructively, with high intensity and energy. Though he has only four weeks to prepare for a Champions League qualifier against Sturm Graz, he aims to implement his philosophy as quickly as possible.

The player turnover continues: key figures like captain Lawrence Shankland and Beni Beningime have departed, while others may follow. Vrancken is comfortable with this and hasn't ruled out further signings. He believes the current squad has the qualities he needs, respecting the work of his predecessor McInnes but emphasizing that every coach brings different focus.

Vrancken sympathizes with Hearts' agonizing title loss last season – he experienced the same with Gent in 2023 when a late goal denied them the championship. He insists the only way forward is to focus on new goals and work hard, hoping next time things will go their way. The club's ambition is exactly what attracted him, and he wants to aim as high as possible.
