Wu drawn against Wilson in British Open second round
World champion Wu Yize will face former Crucible winner Kyren Wilson in an intriguing British Open second-round tie after both progressed from their opening matches.
Wu Yize, China's reigning world champion, defeated compatriot Liu Hongyu 4-3 in Cheltenham to open his British Open campaign, setting up a second-round meeting with 2024 world champion Kyren Wilson. Wilson advanced with a 4-1 win over Austria's Florian Nuessle.
Also through to the second round are last year's British Open champion Shaun Murphy, along with Ding Junhui, Barry Hawkins, Judd Trump and John Higgins.
The first round brought several notable upsets. Three-time world champion Mark Williams was beaten 4-0 by David Gilbert, world number two Neil Robertson lost 4-1 to Pang Junxu, and 2023 world champion Luca Brecel went down 4-3 to Chris Wakelin.
Mark Joyce, standing in for seven-time world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan after his withdrawal for medical reasons, beat Poland's Mateusz Baranowski 4-1.
New world number one Zhao Xintong, who last year became the first Chinese player to win the world title, opens his tournament on Tuesday against England's Oliver Brown. Zhao reached the Wuhan Open final last week, a result that secured him the top ranking, though he went on to lose 10-7 to fellow Chinese player Chang Bingyu in that final.
The British Open draws each round randomly with no seeding, meaning top players can meet one another at an early stage of the event.
