Wakefield Trinity reach first-ever Super League Grand Final

Wakefield Trinity have secured a place in the Super League Grand Final for the first time in the club's history, after a 33-6 semi-final victory over Wigan Warriors, who had been chasing a treble this season. The title decider will take place on 3 October at Old Trafford, where Wakefield will face Warrington Wolves.

England winger Tom Johnstone, who scored two of Wakefield's five tries in the semi-final, admitted that winning the Grand Final had until recently felt like little more than a distant dream. Johnstone began his career at Wakefield and returned to the club at the start of 2025 when Trinity came back up to Super League, following a two-year stint with Catalans Dragons.

A club transformed

Wakefield spent years struggling near the bottom of the Super League table and lost their top-flight status in 2023. That setback, however, marked the beginning of a turnaround, driven by a takeover from kitchen magnate Matt Ellis. His financial backing, combined with the experience and leadership of head coach Daryl Powell, has guided the club back up from the Championship and now to within 80 minutes of becoming Super League champions.

Johnstone said that before rejoining the club, he and his agent visited Ellis's kitchen factory to discuss the club's ambitions and the commitments being made. After that meeting, he concluded that if even some of those promises were fulfilled, it would amount to something special - and that conviction persuaded him to return to Wakefield.
