Wakefield make history with semi-final breakthrough after beating Leigh

Wakefield Trinity have reached the Super League semi-final for the first time in the club's history, following a commanding 26-16 win over Leigh Leopards in a play-off elimination match.

Daryl Powell's side dominated up front, with tries from Tyson Smoothy, Tom Johnstone, Isaiah Vagana and Caius Faatili proving decisive against a Leigh team unable to match Wakefield's forward power.

Leigh briefly threatened a comeback before half-time when David Armstrong scored an impressive try to cut the gap to six points, but Wakefield took full control after the break.

The result was unaffected even after Wakefield forward Emre Guler was sent off in the 60th minute for what appeared to be a punch. Leigh did add two further tries through Lachlan Lam and Innes Senior late on, narrowing the final margin.

Wakefield will now face either Leeds Rhinos or Wigan Warriors in their bid to reach the Super League final.
