Scott Parker, a former West Ham United midfielder, appears to be the frontrunner to become the English football club's next manager, according to fan reactions gathered by the BBC. The supporters are discussing a team trying to return to the Premier League, England's top division, and they note that Parker has a proven record in the Championship, the second tier. Opinions on his possible appointment are mixed.

The doubters

Spencer says Parker is a reasonable choice at the moment, partly because he is a former player, but he does not see it as a long-term strategy. He would have tried to persuade Kieran McKenna or Eddie Howe instead. Calum loved Parker as a player and believes he could get the team promoted, but calls his record after returning to the Premier League shocking. Calum thinks Thomas Frank would be a better long-term fit, since he plays good football and can work with small budgets. Matt wants Craig Bellamy, whom he describes as a young, hungry coach with attacking intent. He calls Parker a West Ham legend but considers him too defensive as a manager.

The backers

Phil notes that many fans are scoffing at Parker. He wanted Bellamy himself, but says Parker's record in this division speaks for itself. Phil argues that supporters should first concentrate on actually reaching the Premier League rather than on past struggles there. Klaus believes Parker's return to the club is written in the stars. He accepts that the tactics may be pragmatic, but says that is exactly what the club needs. In his view, a single-minded focus on promotion matters more than attractive football.
