Wigan clinch sixth League Leaders' Shield with dominant win over Catalans

Wigan Warriors scored nine tries in a commanding 50-12 victory over Catalans Dragons, securing a sixth League Leaders' Shield in the club's history. The win also extended their remarkable run to 16 consecutive victories heading into the Super League play-offs.

Under head coach Matt Peet, the side had won four trophies in 2024 but had gone without silverware so far in 2025 until lifting the Challenge Cup in May. With this latest win, Wigan are now just two games away from completing a treble this season.

Early tries were traded between the two sides, but Wigan pulled ahead before half-time with a string of scores. They continued to add points after the break, while Catalans managed a late consolation try in the closing stages.

Although Friday's win confirmed the shield, the decisive moment of the campaign came the previous week with a crucial victory over rivals Leeds Rhinos, which allowed Wigan to leapfrog them to the top of the table. Had Wigan lost that match, Leeds could have overtaken them on the final day.

Wigan now have a bye before their play-off semi-final at home on 26 September. Catalans, meanwhile, finish the season in ninth place and have missed the play-offs for a second consecutive year since their 2023 final defeat, also against Wigan.

Before kick-off, there were tributes to Wigan's captain, who has announced he will retire at the end of the season.
