A report from Windows Latest has revealed that a recent Windows 11 update is causing significant trouble for some PC users. Since installing it, people have reported game crashes, login errors, display glitches and even full system crashes.

The update in question, KB5121003, was released by Microsoft on August 11 as a mandatory patch and the operating system's main security update for the month. It addressed more than 400 vulnerabilities, but appears to have introduced a number of new bugs in the process.

Gamers hit hardest

The gaming community has felt the impact most acutely, with a rise in reports of titles crashing unexpectedly after the update was installed. Embark Games' ARC Raiders and The Finals appear to be among the most affected titles, with the update apparently breaking compatibility with a specific driver.

Embark says it is working on a fix for its games but has not given a timeframe. In the meantime, the company is advising affected users to open the Windows Command Prompt and disable the driver in question, a workaround detailed further in a report from PC World.

Users also have the option of removing the update entirely through the Update History settings. Doing so, however, would leave their systems exposed to the more than 400 vulnerabilities the patch was meant to fix.

Microsoft has acknowledged the issue and confirmed it has launched an investigation, though it has not yet outlined a remediation plan. The company is encouraging anyone experiencing problems to submit reports through the Feedback Hub.
