The World Rally Championship (WRC) is preparing for major changes: from the 2027 season, a new generation of car regulations will take effect. The new cars are set to be more than half as expensive, designers will have wider scope, and independent car developers will be able to compete in the top class. The changes matter for the whole sport because they could reshape who takes part in WRC. However, as the new era approaches, no team has officially announced its driver line-up.

What the changes aim to achieve

The International Automobile Federation (FIA), the governing body of world motorsport, wants to build a system in which major car manufacturers and independent developers play equally important roles. The main goal of the new era is to make WRC more accessible while keeping sporting competition and technological development intact.

Open questions

The rule change alone does not guarantee more participants. It is not yet known how many teams will actually use the new opportunities or how broad manufacturer involvement will be. For Latvian motorsport fans, a key question is what all this means for the career prospects of Mārtiņš Sesks.
