Wrexham closing in on move for Burnley defender Worrall

Wrexham are nearing a deal to sign Burnley centre-back Joe Worrall, according to BBC Sport. Worrall began his career at Nottingham Forest, making 226 appearances for his boyhood club before joining Burnley in the summer of 2024. During his time at Forest, he was named the club's player of the season in 2020-21, and the following year played a key part in the team's promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs, earning a place in the division's team of the season for 2021-22. His career has also included loan spells at Dagenham & Redbridge, Rangers and Besiktas, with the latter yielding a Turkish Cup triumph in 2023-24. Since moving to Turf Moor, Worrall has made 27 appearances for Burnley across all competitions.

Coady's future in doubt

Worrall's expected arrival could pave the way for Conor Coady, who has 10 England caps, to depart Wrexham. Coady joined the Welsh club from Leicester City last summer but has yet to feature in any of Wrexham's four matchday squads this season.

Other departures possible

Elliot Lee, Harry Ashfield and Aaron James are also among the players who could leave the Racecourse Ground in the next 48 hours, either on loan or permanently. This summer Wrexham have already brought in goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, wing-backs Danny Imray, Issa Kabore and Jacques Ekomie, and midfielder Ben Whiteman. The club could still add a forward before the transfer window closes. Phil Parkinson's side travel to Millwall for a Championship fixture on Wednesday evening, kicking off at 19:45 BST.
