Xbox Acknowledges Disc Game Error During Outage, Promises Fix
Xbox's tech chief confirms that disc-based games should have worked during the recent outage, attributing the issue to a licensing service problem. A fix is planned for an upcoming update.

Xbox experienced a widespread outage earlier this week that not only affected online services but also prevented some players from accessing games on physical discs. The company's technology chief, Scott Van Vliet, explained that the outage originated from problems at an external licensing service. In a statement to The Verge, Van Vliet said that disc-based entitlement checks should not have blocked players from playing their games. He noted that such checks are designed to be stored locally to enable offline play, but the system malfunctioned during the interruption. A fix for the issue will be included in a future update. This incident adds to a challenging period for Xbox, which has faced leadership changes, price increases, and plans to cut 3,200 jobs following a difficult 2025.
