Candle-lighting evenings have begun at cemeteries and autumn clean-up work is under way, so the waste management company SIA “ZAAO” is reminding visitors that household and green waste generated there must also be sorted separately. The appeal applies to municipally managed cemeteries in the company's service area.

To help visitors find their way and keep the grounds orderly, ZAAO has put up information signs for three types of waste in these cemeteries: green cemetery waste, unsorted cemetery waste, and discarded gravestones and grave borders.

What goes into green waste

In the places meant for green waste, only leaves, grass, natural flowers, pine needles and small branches should be placed. Plastic bags, flowerpots, candles and candle holders, artificial flowers and other household waste must not be thrown in.

What goes into unsorted waste

Candles and candle holders, plastic bags, flowerpots and vases, artificial flowers, ribbons, wires, wreaths and other decorative items belong in the unsorted cemetery waste containers. ZAAO notes that candle holders are not glass packaging, so they go into unsorted waste even if they are made of glass.

Monuments, borders, soil and stones

Old gravestones and borders, as well as soil and stones, must be left separately in the place designated for them.

The company says that properly sorted cemetery waste reduces the amount of unsorted waste and ensures that recyclable materials are handled appropriately.
