President Volodymyr Zelensky's decision on 15 July to remove Mykhailo Fedorov as defence minister has triggered ongoing protests and political turmoil in Ukraine. Fedorov, a popular figure credited with driving technological innovation, has refused alternative government posts, stating that only the defence minister, commander-in-chief, or president roles hold real influence. His comment about the presidency has been interpreted as a sign of political ambition.
Fedorov's Rejection and Rising Popularity
Fedorov's rejection of Zelensky's offers has intensified the crisis. Ex-deputy defence minister Alina Frolova noted that without a ministry, one lacks budget and authority. Some observers see Fedorov as a potential presidential candidate following his dismissal. However, an opposition MP criticized his actions as childish, prioritizing political career over wartime unity.
New Commander-in-Chief Appointed
To resolve the military leadership issue, Zelensky appointed Maj Gen Mykhailo Drapatyi, 43, as the new commander-in-chief, replacing the unpopular Oleksandr Syrskyi. Former government adviser Yuriy Sak praised Drapatyi as a battle-proven modern general. However, analysts view this as a partial fix, as Zelensky misjudged young Ukrainians' desire for youthful, dynamic leaders.
Backfire and Criticism
The reshuffle's aim to diminish Fedorov backfired, with his popularity soaring. MP Oleksandr Merezhko noted that Fedorov's "mythic status" may have led to his downfall, quoting "Don't outshine your master." Some question Fedorov's reputation, pointing out that Ukraine already had advanced strike capabilities. A former European defence official emphasized that the innovation culture involves many companies, not one person.
Wartime Context and Future Challenges
Opposition MPs argue that protesters lack understanding of ministry operations. With war fatigue and looming winter, Ukraine needs to move beyond this political episode. Zelensky has urged preparations for winter, while his "long-range sanctions" against Russia continue. The front lines remain static due to drone surveillance, and political damage is unlikely to cause major battlefield setbacks.
