Zelensky urges Trump to impose new Russia sanctions 'now' after deadly strikes
Following deadly Russian strikes on Ukraine, President Zelensky is calling on the US administration to immediately impose new sanctions on Moscow. He also proposed a truce covering attacks on energy infrastructure.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Friday that the administration of US President Donald Trump should immediately impose new sanctions on Russia in response to recent deadly strikes on Ukraine. Speaking at the Yalta European Strategy forum, he said sanctions need to be imposed right away, adding that he often struggles to understand why such decisions cannot be made faster.
The remarks came after Zelensky announced plans to meet Trump in late September, as Washington continues to lead efforts to end the four-and-a-half-year war in Ukraine.
Call for an energy truce
Separately, Zelensky proposed a truce with Russia specifically covering strikes on energy facilities. He said Ukraine stands ready to retaliate if Moscow targets its power grid again this winter, noting that Russia is well aware any strike would be met with an equivalent response.
In recent months, both Moscow and Kyiv have intensified long-range strikes against each other, while US-led talks aimed at ending Europe's deadliest conflict since World War II remain stalled.
Earlier that Friday morning, a Russian drone strike hit a petrol station in Kyiv, killing two people and sending four others to hospital, according to the city's mayor.
