Zelensky at UN: World needs peace before AI starts making battlefield decisions
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told the UN General Assembly that world leaders must halt the rapid development of deadly weapons, warning that artificial intelligence could begin making battlefield decisions as early as next year.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on world leaders on September 23 to slow the rapid development of lethal weaponry, which he said has allowed the Russia-Ukraine war to drag on as long as it has.
Speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York, Zelensky said there is a real possibility that as early as next year, decisions on the battlefield could start being made by artificial intelligence rather than solely by humans. He stressed that peace must be achieved before the world reaches that point.
Call to end wars
Zelensky said it would be better for humanity to end all wars and live in peace now, before artificial intelligence moves from the digital realm into directly shaping physical reality.
Criticism of Putin
In the same address, Zelensky described Russian leader Vladimir Putin as a "patient zero" spreading the ideology of war around the world.
