Zelenskyy discusses army decisions with Fedorov and Syrskyi
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced talks with former Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov and Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, promising to develop decisions regarding the army.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated in his evening address that he had held extensive consultations with former Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrskyi. He noted that he hears what people are saying and that decisions regarding the army will be developed.
Fedorov confirmed ongoing dialogue on X, promising that changes will definitely come. He expressed gratitude for hope and said he had not felt such responsibility even in government positions. Thanks were also extended to veterans and military personnel for holding the battlefield and honor.
According to the Financial Times, Zelenskyy is considering dismissing Commander-in-Chief Syrskyi if a suitable replacement is found, amid protests.
On July 16, protests in support of Fedorov took place near the President's Office in Kyiv and in several other Ukrainian cities. Protesters called on authorities to reinstate Fedorov in the new government and not to hand the defence minister position over to Ihor Klymenko.
Commenting on upcoming changes at the Defence Ministry, Zelenskyy acknowledged that Fedorov and Syrskyi were unable to work together effectively and that problems on the battlefield, in military brigades, and with mobilisation remain unresolved. He stated that Ukrainian citizens have the right to participate in peaceful demonstrations even during wartime, but added that he had not yet made a final decision on the issue.
Later that evening, however, Zelenskyy said he would propose the appointment of Yevhen Khmara as defence minister to the Verkhovna Rada. Khmara, currently acting head of the Security Service of Ukraine, will carry out defence minister duties on the president's instruction.
On July 18, protests in Kyiv resumed against Syrskyi and against Fedorov's dismissal.
