Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on November 5 that Russian strikes have already damaged “every power plant” in Ukraine. He made the remarks in an address to participants of the 30th Ibero-American Summit, a forum of Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries. The statement matters because cold weather is approaching and the condition of the energy system directly affects people's daily lives.

What Zelensky said

According to the president, Russian forces use Shahed-type drones and missiles to hit even the energy equipment on which Ukraine's nuclear power plants depend. “Every power plant in Ukraine has suffered from Russian attacks in one way or another,” he said.

The situation ahead of winter

As the cold season nears, Russia has intensified its attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Kyiv regularly comes under fire, and damage to energy facilities has forced authorities to introduce emergency power outages.

The New York Times reported, citing secret documents intercepted by Ukrainian intelligence services, that Russia is counting on destroying Ukraine's energy system in order to force the country to capitulate.
