Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that an attempt was made on the life of Colonel Ihor Obolenskyi, commander of the Khartiia brigade of the National Guard's 2nd Corps. The attack took place on July 31 and was unsuccessful, with both the perpetrator and an accomplice detained.

According to Zelenskyy, he has already spoken with the commander. No further details of the incident have been released, and there is no official information about whether Obolenskyi sustained injuries. The president said he had received a report on the situation from the new head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), Oleksandr Poklad, and that the investigation is ongoing.

Obolenskyi leads a unit described as one of the most effective formations in Ukraine's defense forces. In his public statement, Zelenskyy framed the assassination attempt as an attack not only on the commander but on Ukraine itself, vowing that the country would definitely respond. He also thanked Obolenskyi for his service and expressed hope that he would continue to strike the occupiers even harder.

The SBU is handling the investigation, but no further circumstances have been made public so far. No additional information about the attack has been officially disclosed.
