Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his address on 20 August that decisions are being prepared to renew Ukraine's diplomatic team, with particular attention to the country's approach toward the United States.

According to Zelenskyy, following the necessary consultations, new appointments will be made in the diplomatic service. He stressed that Ukraine needs concrete results going forward. The president did not disclose which specific personnel changes are under consideration or who might be named to the ambassadorial post in Washington.

Background

The announcement follows Zelenskyy's dismissal of Olha Stefanishyna from her post as Ukraine's ambassador to the United States on 3 August. Days later, on 6 August, Ukraine's High Anti-Corruption Court imposed a bail of UAH 6 million (about US$134,000) on Stefanishyna as a preventive measure. She is suspected of illicit enrichment and filing false asset declarations.

It had previously been reported that Stefanishyna herself had requested to end her diplomatic service, citing personal circumstances.
