Zelensky to Nominate SBU Chief Khmara as Defense Minister
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced he will propose parliament appoint Yevhen Khmara, acting head of the SBU, as defense minister, citing his experience in technological strike operations.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he will ask parliament to appoint Yevhen Khmara as defense minister. Khmara, currently the acting head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), has already begun performing the duties of the defense minister at the president's behest.
According to Ukrayinska Pravda, Zelensky stated that Khmara has a strategic vision for Ukraine's active actions to protect its independence and force Russia into diplomacy. The president highlighted Khmara's extensive experience in conducting technological strike operations, which he believes is crucial for Ukraine's defense in the ongoing war.
"I believe that in the current conditions, real effectiveness in long-range capabilities, truly strong work in ensuring security that guarantees control over the internal situation in Defense Forces units, and real experience in managing people at the SBU's 'Alpha' special operations center should become an advantage in the position of defense minister as well," Zelensky said.
Khmara's appointment comes as Ukraine continues to reform its defense sector to adapt to wartime requirements and strengthen national security.
