Zelensky meets US senators: sanctions bill and missile defence on the agenda

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met in Kyiv on 23 August with two US senators — Republican James Lankford and Democrat Richard Blumenthal — representing both parties in Congress. Zelensky shared details of the meeting on social platform X, as reported by European Pravda.

Zelensky thanked the American lawmakers for their continued bipartisan and bicameral support, highlighting the sanctions bill against Russia that was championed by the late Senator Lindsey Graham. He expressed hope that the bill, which also targets Iran, would ultimately be passed, noting that work on it continues in both chambers of Congress.

Missile defence needs

During the meeting, Zelensky briefed the senators on Russia's ongoing ballistic missile attacks and stressed that Ukraine needs the capability to counter such strikes. He said that US approval for licensed Patriot production could provide significant help. The two sides also discussed broader US-Ukraine cooperation, bilateral agreements and potential future projects.

Background

On 7 August, the US Senate passed the Russia sanctions bill with 86 votes in favour. The legislation, co-authored by Republican Lindsey Graham and Democrat Richard Blumenthal, would impose punitive tariffs on countries importing Russian energy resources. Further action in the House of Representatives is unlikely before September, as lawmakers remain on recess until 31 August. President Donald Trump has repeatedly said he would like the bill to include provisions on Iran, but has indicated he is willing to sign it out of respect for the late Senator Graham.
