Zelenskyy: Ukraine has only 1% of Patriot interceptors needed against Russian ballistic missiles

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an interview with CNN that Ukraine holds only around 1% of the Patriot air defense system interceptors required to effectively counter Russia's ballistic missile attacks.

According to Zelenskyy, the situation could improve significantly with a larger supply of these systems. He noted that even 5% of the needed amount would be enough to help Ukraine get through the upcoming winter period, when Russia traditionally intensifies strikes on energy infrastructure and other civilian targets.

A possible solution to the threat

The Ukrainian president emphasized that obtaining 10% of the required Patriot systems would allow the country to effectively eliminate the threat posed by Russian ballistic missiles altogether. Such a quantity would enable Ukraine to intercept and destroy incoming Russian ballistic warheads, significantly reducing the danger to civilians and infrastructure.

Zelenskyy's statement highlights the persistent gap between Ukraine's defense needs and the military assistance actually being delivered by its partners. Patriot systems are considered among the most effective tools against Russian ballistic missiles, but their supply to international allies remains limited due to production capacity constraints and other countries' own defense requirements.

Zelenskyy used the CNN interview to draw international attention to the need for faster and larger deliveries of Patriot systems to Ukraine, particularly ahead of the approaching winter season.
