Zelensky: This winter could turn painful for Russia if attacks on Ukraine's grid continue

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the UN General Assembly in New York on September 23, warning of consequences for Russia if it continues targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure.

Warning to Russia

Zelensky said Ukrainians understand this winter could be very difficult for them. However, he added that if so, Ukraine would have no choice but to make it painful for Russia as well. The president used a vivid image, saying no Russian official could ever have imagined that 'General Winter,' which fought on Russia's side for centuries, might one day switch sides and support those defending against Russia. He said Ukraine would make this happen this winter if Russia continues attacking the country's energy and heating systems.

Call for de-escalation

The president stressed that this is precisely why steps toward de-escalation are needed before winter arrives. Zelensky reminded world leaders that Ukraine never chose this war — it simply chooses not to die and continues defending itself.

Remarks on Putin

In the same speech, Zelensky stated that Russian leader Vladimir Putin is a kind of 'patient zero' spreading the idea of war around the world.
