A devastating landslide struck the Penshui area, located east of Chongqing, claiming the lives of eight people. The disaster buried over ten residential buildings, initially trapping many residents.

Rescuers have managed to save ten people. According to media reports, local residents noticed falling rocks shortly before the landslide, which allowed for partial evacuation. By the time the landslide occurred, 60 people had already been evacuated.

Several hundred emergency responders, including specially trained rescue teams, were dispatched to the site. The landslide toppled three power line poles, cutting off electricity in the area, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.

Landslides are common in China, especially during the rainy summer months. Last week, a similar incident in northwestern Gansu province near the city of Longnan killed 21 people.
