Latvian hockey club Zemgale/LBTU from Jelgava delivered a commanding preseason win over rivals Mogo on Saturday at Riga's Smerlis arena, finishing the match 11:4. This was the first of two friendly matches scheduled between the clubs this period, with the second meeting set for September 4 in Jelgava. Individual goal scorers were not disclosed.

Preparation tournament results

Both teams recently competed in the LHF President's Cup, where their form diverged sharply. Zemgale looked strong, defeating both Latvia's U20 "maroon" national team and the French U20 national team by 4:1 each. Their only loss came in overtime, 2:3, against Turku TUTO of Finland's second-tier league.

Mogo struggled at the same tournament, losing 3:7 to Latvia's U20 "white" squad and falling 3:4 in overtime to the French junior national team. The Riga side also lost 0:1 to the U20 "maroon" team in the tournament's closing match, finishing at the bottom of the standings.

A long-running rivalry

The two clubs have a lengthy history of competing for Latvian hockey supremacy. After Zemgale claimed national titles in 2022 and 2023, Mogo reversed the trend, winning the finals series 4-1 in each of the last three seasons — 2024, 2025 and 2026. These current friendlies come during the offseason as both clubs prepare for the upcoming championship.
