Zemgale Regional Court Begins Trial of Indian National Jatinder Singh for Serious Crash at Apšupe Intersection

The Zemgale Regional Court today at 10 a.m. is set to hear the criminal case against Indian national Jatinder Singh, charged with driving a vehicle without a valid driver's license and causing a severe traffic accident.

According to the prosecution, Singh, born in 1990, is accused of violating traffic rules in February while driving a Volvo FH truck with a semi-trailer, leading to a collision with a passenger bus. The accident occurred during dark hours on an icy road in Jaunbērze Parish, Dobele Municipality. Both the truck and semi-trailer bore Lithuanian registration plates.

Singh ignored a warning sign indicating that the stop sign was 300 meters ahead, failed to reduce speed, disregarded road markings, and entered the intersection at approximately 50 km/h, where he collided with a bus traveling toward Liepāja.

The crash injured three people. One bus passenger sustained moderate injuries, while another passenger and the bus driver suffered severe injuries, including the traumatic amputation of both lower legs for the driver.

Singh is also accused of using a forged document—he allegedly purchased a fake UAE-style driver's license from an unidentified person and later presented it to police as genuine after the accident.

The accused fully admits his responsibility for the circumstances of the crash but denies the charge of lacking a valid driver's license.
