Zemgale District Court Sentences Father to 20 Years in Prison for Sexual Abuse of His Daughter
The Zemgale District Court in Latvia has sentenced a man to 20 years in prison for sexual violence against his underage daughter. He was taken into custody in the courtroom.
The Zemgale District Court in Latvia this week sentenced a man to 20 years in prison for sexual violence against his underage daughter. The Latvian Prosecutor's Office informed the news agency LETA about the ruling. In addition to the prison term, the court imposed six years of probation supervision. To ensure the sentence is carried out, the man was taken into custody in the courtroom.
What the court established
According to the prosecutor's office, from February 2020 to November 2022 the man repeatedly committed acts of a sexual nature against his daughter, who had not yet turned 16. The acts took place while they were in the same bed. On some occasions he undressed his daughter and continued, even though she tried to stop him.
The court found that the man took advantage of his daughter's helplessness and abused his parental power and influence. He was aware that, because of her age and state of health, the girl could not fully understand the nature and meaning of what was being done to her, and could not protect herself. By acting this way, he endangered the child's sexual inviolability and morals and hindered her normal physical and mental development.
Compensation to the state
The court ordered the defendant to pay the state 22,050 euros. This sum had already been paid to the victim as state compensation.
Prosecutor's appeal
The prosecutor's office urges anyone with even the slightest suspicion that a child may have suffered violence to contact the State Police without delay.
