“Zemgale's Basket” turns 20: poetry collection launch event invites public in Jelgava
On September 11, the Jelgava culture house will host the launch of the poetry anthology “Zemgale's Basket,” marking its 20th edition. The collection is produced annually by the Jelgava Latvian Society's poetry club “Pieskāriens.”

The Jelgava culture house will host the launch celebration of the poetry anthology “Zemgale's Basket” (“Zemgales vācelīte”) on September 11 at 6 p.m., marking the 20th time the event has taken place. The announcement comes from Jānis Zariņš, head of the poetry club “Pieskāriens.”
The anthology has been produced for two decades under the wing of the poetry club “Pieskāriens,” part of the Jelgava Latvian Society. Over the years it has become an autumn tradition bringing together poets and readers of different generations.
Generations of experience
According to Zariņš, the collection's value lies in the people for whom words, feelings, and the chance to express their view of the world remain important. He notes that while times and events change, the desire to write and share what matters most stays constant among contributors.
What the collection contains
The club leader explains that “Zemgale's Basket” features poems touching on personal feelings, love, nature and the seasons, homeland, travel, human relationships, and special moments in life.
Event programme
The upcoming launch of “Zemgale's Basket 2026” will include both poetry readings and musical performances. All interested members of the public, not only the contributing authors, are invited to attend.
