Zemītis: pre-election season is watched like theatre, but heated debate doesn't mean anyone must resign

Musician and head of the Self-Employed Musicians' Association Kaspars Zemītis said on TV24's "Preses klubs" that the pre-election period is treated like theatre, and that sharp political debate is not inherently a bad thing. He called on politicians to simply focus on doing their jobs.

Musician, lecturer at the Latvian Academy of Music and chairman of the Self-Employed Musicians' Association, Kaspars Zemītis, shared his views on how society perceives the pre-election period during an appearance on TV24's programme "Preses klubs," comparing it to a theatrical performance.

According to Zemītis, society often treats the pre-election period like a show, constantly anticipating the next dramatic turn — whether the government will fall, whether someone will resign, or whether some other political sensation will unfold. He noted that people have grown accustomed to following political events the way they follow acts of a play, with a certain expectation of crisis or upheaval.

Debate is not a sign of weakness

Zemītis stressed that sharp, emotional discussions among politicians are not in themselves a negative phenomenon. As an example, he pointed to the British parliament, where lawmakers are known to argue loudly and emotionally during debates. In his view, such a heated exchange of words does not mean that someone must necessarily step down afterward.

He also expressed the belief that politicians, like representatives of any other profession, should concentrate on doing their work well. Zemītis added that people generally believe they know best how to do their own jobs, and that a politician's role could similarly be mastered with a bit of training.
