The charity organization Ziedot.lv has launched a fundraising appeal for 15-year-old Emīls from Saulkrasti. The boy suffers from a progressive disease that confines him to a wheelchair, though he can crawl or slide short distances indoors. At age two, after extensive examinations, he was diagnosed with partial optic nerve atrophy, perceptual and hearing impairments, balance issues, underweight, and epilepsy.

To maintain his current abilities, Emīls regularly attends physical and occupational therapy sessions and uses night orthoses. As the disease progresses, preserving his ability to stand even briefly is crucial. This would allow him to perform daily tasks more independently, such as transferring to his wheelchair, standing up, or dressing, while also easing the burden on his family and caregivers.

Specialists have recommended a verticalizer for Emīls, but the state does not cover the full cost. The device costs 3,712 euros, and Ziedot.lv reports that more than 600 euros have already been donated.
