World's biggest half marathon returns to Tyneside with 63,000 runners

Tyneside is preparing to host the Great North Run this weekend, billed as the world's biggest half marathon, with roughly 63,000 runners set to take part on Sunday.
The route
The 13.1-mile (21km) course takes runners and wheelchair athletes through Gateshead and South Tyneside, finishing in South Shields. Organisers expect hundreds of thousands of spectators to line the streets to watch.
Notable participants
Newcastle captain and England international Dan Burn will ring the starter's bell to open proceedings. Among the well-known faces taking part are football pundit Chris Kamara and fitness coach Joe Wicks.
Schedule and broadcast
The elite men's, women's and wheelchair races will start first, at around 10:25 BST, with the mass field following on the same course shortly after. The event will be shown live on BBC One. A flypast by the Red Arrows aerobatic display team is scheduled to pass over the city at around 10:50.
Travel disruption
Several roads will be closed across the weekend because of the event, including the A167 and A194, so residents and visitors have been advised to plan journeys accordingly.
