North Korea fires projectile into East Sea amid nuclear standoff

North Korea carried out a launch into the East Sea on Sunday, with Japan's Prime Minister's office describing it as a suspected ballistic missile and South Korea's military calling it an unidentified projectile. The launch followed Pyongyang's rejection this week of a resolution by the International Atomic Energy Agency targeting its nuclear programme, with a Foreign Ministry spokesperson stating the resolution had no bearing on the country's self-declared status as a nuclear weapons state.

Trump-Kim dynamics

The launch comes against a backdrop of shifting rhetoric between Washington and Pyongyang. In August, President Trump told reporters that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un possessed 57 very powerful nuclear weapons, while again emphasising the personal rapport between the two leaders. Trump said at the time he planned to meet Kim later this year — which would mark their first meeting since his first term in office — though no further details were given.

On Friday, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung said he had been urging Trump to keep dialogue open with the North, adding that Seoul was working to help facilitate talks between Pyongyang and Washington. He acknowledged uncertainty over the likelihood of such a meeting but stressed the importance of pursuing every possible effort.

However, prospects for near-term engagement may have dimmed after Kim Yo Jong, the North Korean leader's influential sister, criticised recent military drills in the Western Pacific as a US-led war rehearsal. The United States, South Korea and Japan concluded Exercise Freedom Edge 26 on 11 September, which US Pacific Command said had strengthened trilateral readiness across the Indo-Pacific. In a statement carried by North Korea's KCNA news agency, Kim Yo Jong said the country's will to defend its sovereignty would be shown through clearer action and that its course of intensifying nuclear deterrence would never change.
