North Korea has carried out major weapons tests as part of its push to strengthen military capabilities and reinforce its southern border amid ongoing tensions with South Korea.

Leader Kim Jong Un observed the tests and demanded a 'deadly and destructive offensive posture' to ensure the country's enemies feel 'constant uneasiness and fear'. The tests included a special mission ballistic missile warhead, an upgraded rocket launcher with extended range, and a self-propelled howitzer, according to the AP. KCNA reported the warhead aims to inflict fatal damage on key targets such as airfields, ports, and power facilities.

Kim said Pyongyang is seeking 'ultra precision' and long-range capabilities. Analysts suggest the upgrades allow North Korea to strike across all of South Korea. The US maintains about 28,500 troops in the South.

South Korea's Defense Ministry announced plans to build an army of 500,000 'drone warriors' who will use drones like personal firearms. Minister Ahn Gyu-back noted the urgent need to respond to the evolving environment, saying Pyongyang is receiving technological assistance from Russia. President Lee Jae Myung unveiled plans to develop five defense firms worth $650 million by 2030.

Earlier this week, Kim said the navy would be equipped with nuclear weapons and larger warships for 'multifaceted and efficient' operations. North Korea has stalled nuclear talks with the US since 2019, demanding Washington drop its insistence on denuclearization.
