British climber, 28, dies after fall on northern Spain mountain
A 28-year-old British mountaineer died on Thursday after falling around 61 metres from Torrecerredo peak in northern Spain, with his body later recovered by a helicopter rescue team.
A 28-year-old British mountaineer died on Thursday afternoon in northern Spain after falling roughly 61 metres (200ft) down a vertical gully on the east side of Torrecerredo, according to the Spanish Civil Guard for the Asturias region.
The fall happened while the man was descending, about 20 metres below the Torrecerredo summit.
Rescue operation
A rescue team located the mountaineer's remains after flying over the area by helicopter. Two specialists were then lowered to the site to recover the man's body along with his belongings, which had scattered during the fall.
The body was subsequently transported to La Morgal, a regional sports and aviation facility in Llanera, near the Asturian city of Gijón.
A UK Foreign Office spokesperson said the department had been in contact with local authorities regarding the death.
Torrecerredo, standing at approximately 2,649 metres, is the highest peak of the Picos de Europa range, part of the broader Cantabrian Mountains in northern Spain.
