Zilaiskalns invites visitors to an autumn event day on October 3
Latvia's Zilaiskalns hill in Valmiera municipality continues welcoming visitors in October with rail-bike rides and indoor workshops, while October 3 will bring a special event day featuring poetry, a peat factory tour, a sketching workshop, live music and street food.
As autumn sets in, Zilaiskalns in the Valmiera municipality remains a popular destination. The observation tower offers increasingly vivid views, and rail bikes will keep running along the historic tracks throughout October. At the same time, the water tower will resume indoor masterclasses and creative workshops, keeping the hill attractive even in the colder season.
Event day on October 3
The Zilaiskalns Cultural History and Visitor Centre is organizing a themed day combining several activities. From noon, an audio recording of poet Daina Sirmā reading her poems will play near the observation tower, inviting visitors to pause and take in the autumn atmosphere.
In the afternoon, a free guided tour of the Zilaiskalns peat processing plant "Klasmann-Deilmann" will take place, led by its manager Armands Broks, covering peat extraction, processing and export. Advance registration is required.
At 3 p.m., the cultural centre will host a sketching workshop led by Sanda Berga of "Berga vīns," open to everyone regardless of prior experience. The participation fee is 15 euros per person, payable in cash on site.
In the evening, at 5 p.m., the music group "Neīstā atraitne" will perform in the centre's courtyard behind the water tower, offering melancholic, atmospheric music and poetry. Visitors are advised to bring a blanket or seating and a raincoat, as the event takes place outdoors.
Rail-bike rides along the peat bog landscape will run from noon to 5 p.m., available for a fee with limited spots. From noon to 6 p.m., "Zaļais Zars" will offer street food near the centre for the first time, including burgers made with local beef, fries and other snacks.
