A five-year-old elephant seal named Neil from Tasmania, Australia, has become a viral internet sensation after videos of his antics spread on social media. During the annual molting season, Neil heads to coastal populated areas in southern Tasmania, where he causes chaos—knocking down road barriers, breaking fences, and sometimes climbing on parked cars. He has a particular weakness for bright traffic cones.

Dr. Jane Younger, a senior lecturer and seal researcher at the University of Tasmania, explains that such behavior is typical for elephant seals. “He currently weighs about a ton, so he can pose a real danger. He breaks fences and bumps into cars—all because of his size,” she says.

Despite the damage, Neil remains a beloved local celebrity. The conservation service advises people not to come within 20 meters of the animal or attempt to pet it. Dogs should be kept at least 50 meters away and on a leash. Tasmanian Senator Jackie Lambie joked about Neil: “He’s the only guy in Tasmania who can stop traffic, ignore everyone around him, and still be loved by all.”

Neil has his own Instagram account, where nearly 200,000 followers track his adventures, solidifying his status as a true local star.
