Scientists say they may be a step closer to detecting dark matter

Physicists report a potential breakthrough in the search for dark matter, a finding that could reshape our understanding of the universe if confirmed. The lead researcher and Guardian's science editor discuss the results.

For decades, physicists have struggled to understand dark matter — a mysterious substance believed to make up around 85% of all matter in the universe, yet one that has never been directly seen or measured. Its existence is inferred only through the gravitational effects it appears to have on visible objects, such as the movement of galaxies.

Now scientists believe they may have taken a significant step toward directly detecting this elusive substance.
