Heavy downpours expected as Latvia's school year begins
Latvia's Knowledge Day on September 1 will bring changeable weather with rain and possible very heavy downpours, while unsettled, cooling conditions are set to continue through the following days.
Knowledge Day, marking the start of the school year in Latvia, will see cloudy skies with occasional clearing. Isolated showers are expected overnight, and from morning onward rain will spread across much of the country. In some areas, clouds may bring heavy or even very heavy downpours accompanied by thunderstorms, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.
With light winds overnight and in the morning, fog is expected to form widely, potentially reducing visibility. Overnight temperatures will drop to +12…+16°C, while daytime highs will reach +18…+22°C.
Outlook for the coming days
On Wednesday, skies will remain largely cloudy, with rain continuing in many areas and further chances of heavy downpours and thunder. In the first half of the night, very heavy downpours cannot be ruled out in eastern regions. Sunshine will only briefly appear on Thursday, though rain will persist, with storm clouds still lingering locally in the east. Fog is likely again during the night and morning hours on Thursday.
Winds will be light to moderate from the west, shifting to southwest and south on Thursday. The night before Thursday will be slightly cooler than previous nights, with temperatures dropping to +10…+14°C.
Towards the end of the first week of September, precipitation zones will continue moving across Latvia, with gusty winds also expected on Sunday. Daytime temperatures will warm to +14…+19°C, while overnight lows will mostly range between +10 and +15°C.
