September 1 in Latvia traditionally marks the Day of Knowledge — the official end of summer holidays and the start of the new school year. The day holds special meaning for both pupils and parents, as school hallways once again fill with children's voices, excitement and a festive mood.

However, not all children feel the same way about the day. For some pupils, the Day of Knowledge is a long-awaited event, since after a long summer break they finally get to see friends and classmates again. For others, the thought of returning to school is far less appealing, and the start of the new year can bring stress or reluctance instead.

Celebrities share their moments

As has become customary, well-known public figures also used the day to share photos on social media from the morning they walked their own children to school or kindergarten. Such posts have become an annual tradition, a reminder that September 1 is a meaningful family occasion even in the lives of well-known people.

Alongside the start of the school year, attention is also being drawn to how parents can best support children through this transition. Rather than general encouragements, parents are advised to use more specific, reassuring phrases to help a child feel more confident on the first day of school. The question of whether parents are entitled to a day off on September 1, if their annual supplementary leave has already been used earlier in the year, also remains a recurring topic.
