Sources at the Élysée Palace, cited by Ukrinform, say countries that produce or already own Patriot air defense systems are considering several options for swiftly getting additional units to Ukraine ahead of winter. Asked whether Ukraine would receive more Patriots soon, French presidential officials said the matter is currently under active discussion, though no final decisions have been announced.

According to the sources, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been the most insistent voice pushing for strengthened air defense, as Russia continues to shift its tactics and the types of weapons used in strikes on Ukraine. The sources also stressed that Patriot systems alone will not be enough — Ukraine needs a broader mix of air and missile defense capabilities.

SAMP/T and Aster missiles

In that context, France, working together with Italy, is preparing to hand over SAMP/T air defense systems along with Aster missiles to Ukraine. No specific timeline for the transfer has been disclosed yet.

The news follows an extraordinary Ukraine-NATO Council meeting at the level of permanent representatives on September 7, during which the Ukrainian delegation presented a list of priority and urgent air and missile defense needs, urging allies to speed up the reinforcement of Ukraine's air defenses.
