Cameron Crowe's 1996 film 'Jerry Maguire', starring Tom Cruise, has long been regarded as a beloved romantic comedy. However, a fresh essay published in The Guardian offers a deeper look at why the film continues to evoke strong positive emotions.

The author argues that the feelgood effect stems not from a traditional rom-com formula but from the profound transformation of the main character. Jerry Maguire is a sports agent who gets fired after writing a principled mission statement. Only one client, the mercurial wide receiver Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr.), follows him. At the heart of the film is Jerry's love for Dorothy Boyd (Renée Zellweger), the only coworker who believes in his vision.

Unlike typical romantic comedies where marriage is the climax, 'Jerry Maguire' follows the structure of 1930s 'remarriage' comedies, as examined by philosopher Stanley Cavell. The film does not begin with two people falling in love; it ends with that. Jerry marries Dorothy but truly falls in love only after they separate. His famous speech ('You complete me', 'You had me at hello') is not a traditional happy ending but an expression of deep personal growth.

The essay emphasizes that Jerry's love initially based on loyalty and service. He marries Dorothy to secure her loyalty, not out of genuine love. Dorothy, in turn, loves him 'for the man he almost is.' Only when Jerry realizes he wants her even when she can do nothing for him does he truly fall in love.

Critics often point out the film's length and digressiveness, but the author notes that these elements allow for an emotionally powerful climax. The film earns its dramatic moments by putting the characters through hardships.

'Jerry Maguire' is currently available for digital rental in the US, on Now TV in the UK, and on Netflix in Australia.
