Sweden will send a Patriot air defense system and about 100 soldiers to Poland in early December to protect the NATO logistics hub in Rzeszów, which supports Ukraine. The Swedish troops will take over the task from the Netherlands.

Sweden's armed forces announced on Tuesday that a Patriot air defense system, along with roughly 100 soldiers, will be deployed to Poland. Their mission will be to protect the NATO logistics center in Rzeszów, a key hub that distributes military and civilian support to Ukraine.

Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard stated that the move is directly tied to supporting Ukraine's military and civilian needs. The Swedish contingent is expected to arrive in Poland in early December, taking over responsibility for the hub's protection from the Netherlands, which had previously handled the task.

Sweden's path into NATO

The decision to station troops and air defense equipment in Poland fits into a broader shift in Swedish security policy. Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Sweden abandoned its roughly two-century-long tradition of military neutrality, formally joining NATO in March 2024.

Last year, Sweden had already joined a NATO mission to monitor Polish airspace, contributing its own Gripen fighter jets to the effort. The new announcement about deploying the Patriot system signals a further expansion of Sweden's military involvement in defending NATO's eastern flank.
