Sweden has announced a new financial contribution to support Ukraine worth approximately 270 million Swedish kronor, or about $28.3 million. The funds will be distributed among several multilateral funds and initiatives backing Ukraine.

The Swedish government has instructed its armed forces to allocate the money across various funds and initiatives totaling more than 270 million kronor. Of this sum, $14 million will go toward the PURL initiative, which is used to purchase American-made weapons for Ukraine.

Emphasis on urgent weapons needs

Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson said his country's support for Ukraine is long-term, substantial, and based on Ukraine's needs and priorities. He noted that continued support for the PURL initiative allows Ukraine to quickly access high-priority American equipment, including air defense systems and ammunition, which help Ukraine keep defending itself against Russia's ongoing attacks.

Fifth contribution to PURL

This marks the fifth time Sweden has contributed to the PURL initiative. Including this latest contribution, Sweden's total funding for the program has reached $552 million.

Other Nordic countries have also stepped up support for Ukraine's air defense. In July, the Norwegian government announced it would allocate 3 billion kronor, or 268 million euros, to strengthen Ukraine's air defense, partly through the PURL program.

Separately, on August 25, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine had received missiles for its Patriot air defense systems from partners.
