Swedish Government Offices Blocks Staff Access to ChatGPT and Claude

The Swedish Government Offices have blocked access to the AI services ChatGPT and Claude on work computers. The aim is to steer staff toward officially approved solutions, including Microsoft Copilot.

The Swedish Government Offices, the body that supports the work of the country's government, have tightened restrictions on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools. Staff can no longer reach the popular AI services ChatGPT and Claude from their work computers. The decision applies to the institution's official equipment and is aimed at making AI use in public administration more secure.

Why access was restricted

The main reason is a wish to move personnel toward officially approved and secure solutions. One of those named is Microsoft Copilot, the AI assistant from the company Microsoft. That tool has recently received additional security improvements.

Who announced it

The matter was addressed in an internal communication by Mikael Wettercrantz, the digitalisation director of the Government Offices.

What it means

The step is an example of how public bodies control which AI tools employees can use at work. The Government Offices' approach is that staff should rely on tools approved by the institution rather than widely available commercial chatbots. The source does not say whether the restrictions will also apply to other Swedish state institutions.
