Sweden's left bloc edges toward election win as tiny centrist party may hold the key

Sweden's general election has developed into an unusually tight contest, with the outcome still unresolved for several days after polls closed. Exit polling released on September 13 pointed to a left-bloc victory, suggesting Social Democrat leader Magdalena Andersson was on track for a comeback as prime minister at the head of a left-wing coalition.

As vote counting progressed, however, the picture grew murkier. Later the same day, with most ballots tallied, the race was declared too close to call, with the left bloc holding just a single-seat edge over a right-wing alliance that includes the far-right Sweden Democrats. By September 14, that margin had widened slightly, with the left bloc leading by three seats over the same right-wing grouping.

A small party could decide it all

By September 15, it had become apparent that the deadlocked election might ultimately be decided by the leader of a small centrist party. That leader, a relative newcomer to national politics, has emerged as one of the most consequential figures in the country, since her party's position could determine which bloc ultimately forms a government.

The closeness of the result underscores how evenly split Swedish voters remain between the traditional left and right camps, with the far-right Sweden Democrats continuing to play a significant role within the right-wing alliance. As of the latest reporting, it remained unclear which side would ultimately be able to form a government.
