The board of the Union of Greens and Farmers (ZZS) decided on Sunday to recall its representative Reinis Uzulnieks from the post of welfare minister.

According to Latvian Television, the decision followed police catching Uzulnieks driving a car while intoxicated. This incident became the direct reason for the party board's action.

Swift decision

The party leadership reacted quickly, deciding on the same Sunday to remove the minister from his post. This suggests the ZZS leadership considered such behavior by its government representative unacceptable and incompatible with ministerial duties.

It is not yet known who will take over the welfare minister post going forward, nor whether administrative or criminal proceedings will be initiated against Uzulnieks over driving under the influence of alcohol.
