Greens/Farmers' Union names Valainis, not Lembergs, as PM candidate for elections
With less than a month left before the 15th Saeima elections, the Union of Greens and Farmers has put forward Viktors Valainis instead of the usual Aivars Lembergs as its prime ministerial candidate. In an interview he discussed Andris Šķēle's growing influence and the party's values.
With less than a month remaining before the 15th Saeima elections, the Union of Greens and Farmers (ZZS) will once again take part in the vote. This time, however, the party's candidate for prime minister has changed — instead of the usual Aivars Lembergs, the role has been taken up by ZZS board member and chairman of the Latvian Green Party board, Viktors Valainis.
Pre-election interview
On September 4, Valainis appeared on the public broadcaster's program "Kas notiek Latvijā?" as part of its pre-election series, in which representatives of various parties are interviewed. During the conversation, the politician shared his views on several current issues.
One of the topics discussed was the growing influence of Andris Šķēle in both the economy and politics, linked to the return of the "Apvienotais saraksts" (United List) to the ruling coalition. Valainis also addressed the question of what traditional values mean to ZZS.
Focus on the economy
The conversation also touched on the role the national economy plays in the union's work and its election promises. The interview was part of a broadcast series dedicated to the upcoming elections, aimed at clarifying the positions of the parties running.
The 15th Saeima elections are scheduled to take place within the coming month, and ZZS will contest them with a new candidate for prime minister.
